Pigments: white lime, yellow earth, red earth (haematite), green earth, malachite, azurite, lead pigment(s)
Analytical techniques: OM, Raman, FTIR, XRD, XRF
The intonaco is very thin; in some of the damaged parts where it is peeling off, it is only three millimetres thick. It is made of lime as a binder and sand as an aggregate, which is much more abundant. Consequently, the plaster is rather brittle and cracked, which could also be due to its thinness. The cross-sections (Figs. 1–2) reveal varicoloured grains of various sizes, whose angular shape indicates the use of crushed sand. Most of the grains are large and translucent, probably quartz, as the Raman spectroscopy and XRD analysis point to a high quartz content in the plaster. Raman spectroscopy also reveals the presence of haematite and calcite (lime). The XRD graph of the analysed plaster confirms a high quartz content, while only a little lime, and some impurities such as feldspars, illite/muscovite, and kaolinite. Apparently, the sand in question was poorly washed and the plaster was dominated by the aggregate, while the lime content was too low to ensure good bonding. Because of the many cracks, it is difficult to discern the potential giornate. However, at least on the triumphal arch wall, we can definitely distinguish the boundaries between the horizontal bands of the murals. The upper scene, depicting the Procession of the Magi, was painted before the central band with the female saints, which, in turn, preceded the decorative band below. Given the early date of these murals, it is possible that the plaster was not applied according to the system of giornate but rather as pontate (longer horizontal bands).
The black image of the mural is striking, as nothing similar has been found anywhere else in Slovenia.[1] The relevant samples also indicate that the layer, whose colour ranges from dark brown to black, was applied directly to the plaster (Fig. 2–3). In some parts of the scene with the female saints and the one with a saintly legend, the original blue and green colours have also been preserved. This suggests the use of azurite and malachite, as confirmed by the Raman spectroscopy and XRF analysis. In al fresco murals, azurite often transforms to green-coloured basic copper chloride (atacamite, paratacamite, etc.) due to moisture, alkaline lime, and chloride salts. Therefore, for many parts of the mural, it is impossible to ascertain whether the original colour was blue or green. Both pigments – azurite, in particular – can further degrade to dark tenorite, which Raman analyses have confirmed for most of the black colour samples. This can occur in alkaline environments (lime) or due to high temperatures. Historical sources document several fires in Ormož, for example in 1487, 1647, 1704, and 1778,[2] but it is unknown whether the church was also affected each time. Moreover, azurite and malachite are less stable when finely ground. The cross-sections confirmedextremely fine grains of the pigment (Figs. 4–5). On the other hand, XRF analyses have also revealed the presence of lead pigments, which are highly unstable and also tend to darken, degrading into platternite, mainly due to sulphur in the atmosphere.[3] The lead pigments could not be identified either with the XRF technique or Raman spectroscopy, nor was it possible to establish whether only one or several pigments were used (lead white, massicot, or minium). The third potential cause of the darkening could be the degradation of the organic binder. FTIR has identified the presence of a certain protein binder in the darkened colour layers, which are also very dense and compact (Figs. 2–3), suggesting the use of some organic substance as well. The pigment was probably impregnated with egg tempera, which lowers the thermal stability of azurite and malachite. This could also have led to the darkening of both the pigments and the binder. In the case of the Ormož mural, the phenomenon may be a combination of all three factors and the transformation of all three materials (copper and lead pigments, protein binder) – or just one of them.[4] Apart from the copper and lead pigments, the painter’s palette also included white lime, yellow and red earth (haematite), an unidentified organic black pigment, and probably green earth (XRF: aluminium, potassium, manganese, iron). In some places, the latter was obviously mixed with malachite (Fig. 5), making it more stable and preserving the green colour, as seen in the depiction of the saintly legend on the northern wall of the main nave. Lime from the plaster served as the main binder, though some organic binder, probably egg yolk, was also added to many of the pigments, as indicated by the FTIR analyses.

The mural was painted using a combination of the al fresco and al secco techniques. Most of the basic colour layers were painted al fresco, but as the plaster is very thin and was probably applied in pontate, it must have dried quickly, so much of the painting had to be done on an already dry base. The cross-sections (Figs. 1–5) suggest that all the colour layers were applied directly to the plaster. Malachite and azurite were not underpainted (Figs 4–5), as was customary in medieval mural painting. An organic binder was added to the pigments to ensure that the angular albeit fine pigment grains adhered better to the painting base. In some cases, this mixture was applied to the already dry base (Fig. 5). All subsequent layers of modelling and the final details were also applied to the already dry plaster. However, the parts painted al secco have mostly fallen off.
A red underdrawing (Fig. 6), made with a thin line and with some corrections, is visible in several places. The horizontal boundaries between the scenes were also defined with a straight red line, apparently made with a string dipped in red colour and stamped on the wall. All the halos and the outlines of the saints’ heads were incised with deep and strong lines, as was the knife of the first female saint, while the rest of the attributes show no incisions. There are no pouncings, either. No underpaintings were found under the colour layers, not even for the copper pigments (Figs 4–5). Only in the case of the intermediate black horizontal bordure between the two scenes on the triumphal arch wall, some red colour layer is showing from under what is now a blackened colour. The extremely slender and tall figures come across as elegant with their narrow waists. The torsos of the standing female saints are tilted slightly backwards. All the figures in all scenes are mostly depicted in three-quarter profile, but unfortunately, all of their facial features have been lost. The faces are elongated, with high foreheads, only slightly rounded cheeks, and small pointed chins, as is characteristic of the time of the painting. Only the outlines of the narrow hands with long parallel fingers are still visible. The modelling of the colours has not been preserved. In the scene with the Magi, we can see remnants of a yellow and red colour, while the scene with of the saintly legend still features some green. However, the subsequent colour modelling is gone. In the case of the figures from the saint’s legend, we can still see a few of the quick, long strokes, made with a centimetre-thick brush, defining the folds of his tunic. Meanwhile, a broader brush was mainly used for basic colour applications. Due to the degradation of the pigments, it is impossible to determine the colours of the original painting, while the loss of the top colour layers also prevents us from determining whether the modelling was fine or coarse, which could tell us a great deal about the quality of the painter or workshop.
