Description

At the eastern window by the chancel, on the southern wall of the nave, a small fragment of an older layer of paint has been preserved under a more recent one.[1]

Stylistic analysis

As this is a small fragment with an unrecognisable motif, it is impossible to carry out a stylistic analysis.

Datation

Janez Höfler dates the fragment to the 14^th century.[1]

Technical analysis

Pigments: white lime, yellow earth, red earth (haematite), carbon black

Analytical techniques: OM, Raman

Plaster

The plaster is made of lime and sand. The cross-sections reveal angular ochre-coloured sand grains (fig. 1). Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of calcite and quartz.

Pigments and binders

The painter used white lime, yellow and red earth (haematite), and carbon black. The binder is inorganic lime.

Painting technique

The two samples taken indicate a combination of two painting techniques – al fresco (fig. 2) and lime technique. Under UV light, a thin layer of limewash can be seen (figs. 1, 3).

Painting process and modeling

As only fragments of the painting have been preserved, the painting process cannot be discussed. The preserved colour layers were painted using a broad brush without any modelling. It is possible that the painter first completed the central part of the mural and only then added the bordures, which were therefore painted on limewash (the red edging).
