Pigments: white lime, red earth, organic black

The cross-sections reveal that the painting support is very bright and that the aggregate contains some translucent angular grains (figs. 1–2). X-ray diffraction showed an extremely high content of dolomite and very little calcite. Therefore, the aggregate mostly consists of dolomite or perhaps dolomite marble bound with lime, resulting in an extremely high-quality, solid, and bright painting support.
Red earth and some kind of organic black pigment were used. The desired red hues were obtained by mixing red earth with a bit of white lime and organic black, as the sample cross-section clearly shows (fig. 1).
The colour layers are applied directly on the plaster, which is obvious from the blurred boundary between the two (figs. 1–2).
The painter used broad brushes to apply a red base and a thick black final contour. No fine modelling or transitions between the hues exist. The mural is rather simple.
