A natural inorganic brown-coloured pigment. Its chemical composition is iron oxide with traces of manganese, Fe2O3. While this earth pigment is suitable for painting on fresh plaster, it does not cover the surface very well and lightens considerably when drying. The hue and quality of the pigment are affected by various organic impurities. By burning umber, a reddish-brown colour is produced.
