painting on a wet surface

Painting on fresh, still-damp plaster, i.e. al fresco. The pigments are impregnated with water, lime water or lime milk. Lime from the plaster acts as a binder that fixes the pigments to the base – the plaster – through a process called carbonation. Only pigments stable in alkaline lime can be used – meaning mainly those of natural inorganic origin, i.e. minerals and earth. The resulting fresco is extremely durable, as it is resistant to water, air, and light.
