The top, outermost layer of plaster, which contains the finest sand and the largest amount of lime and is therefore also the smoothest and most suitable for painting. Crushed limestone or marble flour (marmorino) can sometimes be added to this plaster instead of sand, making it even more uniform, smooth, and white. The word intonaco is the established Italian term for this layer of plaster.
