A bright red inorganic pigment. Its chemical composition is mercuric sulphide, HgS. In nature, it occurs as a reddish crystal mineral, most often near extinct volcanoes and geysers. It is a very rare and therefore expensive pigment and is only used in painting as the purest mineral.
