carbonation

The chemical process of slaked lime reverting to its original state, limestone. On contact with air, slaked lime – calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2 – absorbs carbon dioxide, CO2, from the air while emitting water, H2O, and thus transforming back into calcium carbonate, CaCO3. The carbonation process represents the basis for the al fresco painting technique and ensures its durability, as a mural painted using this technique practically turns to stone.
