A coarse layer of plaster mixed with lime as a binder and coarse sand as aggregate. In the case of multi-layered plaster applications, arriccio is the penultimate layer just before the application of intonaco. In the case of two-layer plaster applications, it is used to straighten the support/wall and serves as the base for applying intonaco. It is also the support for sinopia. The established term arriccio originates from Italian.
